Okay. First things are first – WASH YOUR HANDS !!!! I think that this has been the biggest takeaway from the past year. Covid-19 ha s brought to the people’s attention that they should wash their hands frequently. If this was a spectacular revelation for you, then GROSS!

Now that we have learned that we should practice good personal hygiene, how should we complete our restroom experience after we have serenaded everyone in the privy with 2 rounds of “Happy Birthday”, 6 stanzas of “Amazing Grace”, or “The Bohemian Rhapsody”? What is the best way to dry our hands?

This subject can be a point of much contention. It seems like half of the information out there supports paper towels while the other half concludes that hand dryers are better. I have culled through a lot of “studies” done by paper towel and hand dryer manufacturers. Surely, they wouldn’t have any type of bias…

There are many considerations for the practicality of both methods. Price, maintenance, and the environment are all big topics worthy of discussion. However, I think the overriding concern for most of us is: Which one is more hygienic?

Which Is More Hygienic?

Hand dryers typically consume less energy to manufacture and to maintain day to day than paper towels. They also produce far less waste for our landfills. Technology has helped to improve these relatively basic machines over the last couple of decades. Many now have HEPA filtration or UV lights with the intent to reduces pathogens on hands.

But, I am a practical thinker. Results matter. Gadgets and gimmicks don’t always get the job done. Let’s talk physics.

Studies show that paper towels can dry hands 90 percent in 10 seconds. It takes hand dryers 43 seconds for 55-68 percent dryness. Moist hands leaving a restroom have a higher risk of transmission than dry hands.
While the dryers may reduce bacteria and viruses on the hand, they also rapidly force large amounts of air through a confined space. It may be filtered air through the machine, but that air is also moving throughout a restroom that has harmful microbes on surfaces. This rapid air movement can dislodge surface pathogens, sending them hurtling through the air to the mouths and noses of totally unsuspecting participants. YUCK!

Don’t get me wrong. Our environment is critical. And, we can debate on the process in which paper is made. I believe there are better substances to make paper from than trees.

I am a huge fan of being a good steward of our planet. But, I am also a big proponent of being around myself, to do my part.

What Is “Disinfection Fogging”?

Disinfection fogging is an everyday term these days. Covid-19 has turned the world on its head and has everyone a little more aware of threats that we cannot see. “Foggi ng” is a general term referring to the use of devices that reduce a liquid disinfectant to a finer spray. Typically, the disinfectant is then directed toward surfaces in a facility with the intent of killing viruses and bacteria.

It seems like everyone under the sun is offering “disinfection services”. And, there are so many terms used to describe what they do… electrostatic spraying, fogging, dry fogging… The choices seem endless. Each is effective in certain situations or environments. So, which is right for you?

Well, let’s go over the basics:

Misting
Can be done with a typical spray bottle or a garden pump sprayer, making it very inexpensive.
Produces a very large droplet size(comparatively speaking) which makes it necessary to saturate surfaces being treated.
Ineffective when treating airborne pathogens.
Electrostatic Spraying
Charges the particles causing the mist to attract to surfaces extremely well. It even has the ability to wrap around surfaces(to some degree).
Produces a medium size droplet which still requires some saturation of surfaces.
Equipment can be expensive.
Must use certain types of chemicals.
Ineffective when treating airborne pathogens.
Dry Fogging
Still uses moisture, but, the droplet size is so small that it will not wet surfaces.
E quipment is expensive.
Chemicals are usually proprietary.
Somewhat effective in reducing airborne pathogens.
ULV Fogging(Ultra Low Volume)
Variable volumes allow for small to medium droplet sizes. This allows a qualified operator to choose saturation level of surfaces.
Equipment is usually moderately priced.
Any chemical can be applied.
Somewhat effective in reducing airborne pathogens.

Things to consider when disinfecting:

Nothing can take the place of cleaning. Surfaces need to be free of soils for fog treatments to be the most productive. It is really hard to kill what can’t be reached. We suggest using botanical disinfectants and microfiber cloths.
Your chemical choice can always have negative consequences. Some chemicals leave behind a film if the surfaces are saturated. Most require areas to be vacant for a period of time to allow the disinfectant to settle(usually a couple of hours). Many require the use of protective equipment such as skin protection and respirators. We suggest using botanical disinfectants that often don’t require downtime or protective gear.
Fogging should always be performed by someone with proper training and equipment.

Hire a Professional

While each of these methods has a place in our fight against viruses and bacteria, every facility has specific needs.

The Fight Against Germs at Church

Every facility has its fair share of germs. Churches are no exception. With a constant influx of people, it is a constant struggle to make sure that the Holy Spirit is all that we leave worship with.

Every surface is a possible hiding place for bacteria and viruses. Doors, light switch plates, bathrooms, upholstery, carpet, and air ducts are potential breeding grounds for harmful microbes. Viruses, including Covid-19, can even survive in the air for hours.

While qualified staff can address most hard surfaces, how do we take care of the threats that are stubbornly hiding in those “hard to reach areas”?

What is Ozone?

Ozone(O3) is both a naturally occurring and a man-made gas. It is also referred to as “activated oxygen”.
